FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

City of San Clemente Begins its Search for Offshore Sand

October 16, 2024…. San Clemente, California…. At its October 15, 2024 meeting, the San Clemente City Council unanimously approved a professional services contract with a team of coastal engineers and scientists to locate beach quality sand in the ocean near San Clemente. The offshore sand source investigation is funded by a grant from the California Coastal Commission (CCC) and will help the City locate additional sand to support its plans for long term, comprehensive beach sand replenishment efforts in the City. Locating additional beach sand deposits, close to the City, will help promote a cost-effective, resource-smart approach to long term beach sand replenishment in San Clemente.

The team will begin their work later this month looking for sand deposits in the offshore area between San Mateo Point and Dana Point, implementing a key recommendation from the City’s 2021 Coastal Resiliency Plan. Additional information developed as part of this work effort will be shared with the public as it becomes available and will be posted on the City’s Coastal Planning webpage at the following link www.san-clemente.org/LCP
