The City of San Clemente will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new pickleball courts at Richard T. Steed Memorial Park (“Steed Park”), located at 247 Avenida La Pata, San Clemente, on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, at 10 a.m. The facility will include eight pickleball courts with access to nearby restrooms and parking. The pickleball courts are designed to be temporary as the City works towards funding the permanent facility in the undeveloped portion of Steed Park.
The temporary pickleball courts at Steed Park have been a part of an extensive effort to improve pickleball facilities and work towards expanded access to the growing sport within the San Clemente community. The first of these efforts included an update to the master plan for Steed Park which was adopted by the City Council in May 2023. Alongside a pickleball facility with up to 24 courts, this master plan update also includes an expansion of the skate park, a pump track/BMX bike facility, a renovated off-leash dog park, a multipurpose sports field, and expansive walking paths with picnic areas and scenic outlook areas.
Coinciding with the opening of the courts at Steed Park, the City’s pickleball courts at San Gorgonio Park will close on November 7. A public hearing is scheduled at the regular meeting of the City Council on the same day at 6 p.m. to consider an amendment to the San Gorgonio Park master plan that will include removing pickleball courts and re-designating the court space for the sole use of tennis.
