Army Corps of Engineers Beach Sand Replenishment
|
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed a feasibility study of shoreline erosion along San Clemente, and approved a project to place sand along a portion of San Clemente’s beach. The project involves placing 250,000 cubic yards of sand from Linda Lane to South T-Street beaches to widen the beach about 50 feet. About every 6-7 years over a 50-year project life additional sand would be placed. The project includes extensive monitoring before and after sand placement to help ensure that impacts to the environment are minimized. The cost for the initial sand placement is about $11 million, and the City would be responsible for about $4 million with the Federal government providing about $7 million. Although approved by the Corps of Engineers, the project must be authorized by Congress and then approved in a subsequent Federal budget. Congress is expected to start work soon on a Water Resources Bill that would include the project. Due to the significant project cost, the City will likely need grant funding assistance to be able to fund the project.
