Civic Background:
Since 1983 I have been on the Board of Directors of the San Gabriel Valley Council, Boy Scouts of America, and have been council Treasurer since 1986. This council serves over 30,000 young people. I was also involved with and did volunteer work for the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce and the United Way of San Gabriel Valley. During residency in Huntington Beach I was on the board of my homeowners association in Seacliff on the Greens for five years and board President for two years. Since 2003 I have been on the Board of Directors of the Talega Maintenance Corporation, which is the Talega homeowners association, and is the non-profit corporation that owns and administers the common area in the Talega development of San Clemente. I am currently the corporate Secretary. From July 2004 through June 2005 I was the Foreman of the 2004-2005 Orange County California Grand Jury. I am currently on the Design Review Subcmmittee of the Planning Commission.

Personal Note: : I was born in Ithaca, New York, and raised in Decatur, Georgia for most of my young life, and Schofield Barracks, Hawaii for the last two years prior to college. I received my undergraduate BS degree from The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. Additional graduate education includes an MA degree from George Washington University, MBA from American University, and JD from Washington College of Law, American University.

Upon graduation from The Citadel, I was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps and served the next twenty years on active duty, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. After leaving the Marine Corps I worked in law firm and university administration for several years, and subsequently in the management training industry. From 1984 through 2002 I was Regional Managing Director of Human Resources for the Management Consulting Division of Price Waterhouse LLP, which became PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in 1998.

I resided in San Clemente from mid 1963 through early 1965 while stationed in the Marines at Camp Pendleton and have resided in Talega since early 2001. I have four grown children; one each in Sacramento and Santa Rosa, and two in Richmond, Virginia. It is a distinct honor to have been appointed to the Planning Commission and given the opportunity to serve this wonderful community. There is a real need to balance the requirements of a growing community with the desire to maintain the traditional character of San Clemente that makes this such a special place to reside.

Civic Background:Current: Planning Commission Member; Design Review Sub-Committee Member; Saddleback Memorial Hospital Foundation, San Clemente, Founding Board Member and Special Event Co-Chair for annual gala, “Dancing to a New Beat,”; and Chamber of Commerce Member.

Past: San Clemente Leadership Program Graduate; Landmark Preservation Ordinance Task Force Member; Southern California Business Marketing Association Board Member; Young Professionals Against Cancer Board Member; Alumni Advisor to the Alpha Psi Chapter (UCLA) of Alpha Chi Omega.

Education: Graduate, San Clemente High School, B.A. in English, UCLA

Occupation: Along with my partner, Cathy Lentz, I operate DardenLentz, an advertising agency that has been based in San Clemente for over two decades.

Personal Note: I have long had an affection for my home town and have developed a passion for maintaining its unique culture during this time of continuing growth and redevelopment. I came to this level of commitment somewhat accidentally and, frankly, selfishly; I applied to the Landmark Preservation Ordinance Task Force because, as an historic property owner, I was concerned that new ordinances might affect my personal property rights. During my service, I saw beyond my own interests to much broader issues. And, I became aware of the role that current and past planning commissioners have had on the changes that have shaped our community as it has grown from the sleepy town of my childhood to a vibrant city of over 65,000. As I began to understand the planning issues facing San Clemente, I realized that I wanted to help ensure that future decisions support the city’s vision and the will of our citizens. I realized, too, that protecting the unique character of our city while allowing for necessary growth and revitalization is, at times, a difficult balance to strike. These challenges inspired my application to the Planning Commission, and continue to inspire my ongoing service.

Understanding our code and sound principles of planning and architecture takes study; but understanding the will of the citizens is far more difficult. That’s why public participation in our hearings is so important. Your input helps frame our opinions. Please help us in this process by speaking up. You may email me at jmember@dardenlentz.com at any time, or better yet, join us for a meeting.

Education: I am a graduate of California Polytechnic University San Luis Obispo with a degree in Architecture. Being licensed in California, a National and Local A.I.A. member, a Green Building Council member and Leeds Certified Provider I am required to complete numerous hours of Continuing Education each year to maintain my licenses and memberships. These courses include ADA requirements, Life Safety Issues, Energy Efficiency, Planning, Materials of Construction and Green Building Practices etc. In my spare time my wife and I restored a Historic 1907 Bungalow home at 286 N. Orange Ave. in the City of Orange, CA.

Occupation: Architect and Principal of Pekarek-Crandell, Inc. located in San Juan Capistrano. As an Architect, I have made numerous project presentations to Cities and Planning Commissions throughout the State and am extremely familiar with the application process and the difficulties applicants face when presenting their projects.

Personal Note: Being a native Southern Californian and surfer and having always lived on the California Coast, it’s understandable that I appreciate and am dedicated to maintaining our natural coastal resources. I have visited most all the coastal towns along the California and Oregon Coasts and am convinced San Clemente has everything necessary, including the History and interested and involved residents, to improve it position as one of the Gems of the California Coast. San Clemente’s Vision Statement gives a balanced description of the goals necessary to accomplish this, however implementing it is the trick. It will be a lengthy process and as a Planning Commissioner and resident I will never lose sight of our mutual long-term goals.

Civic Background
Planning Commission member; General Plan Advisory Committee member; Graduate of the Leadership San Clemente program; Member of the International Dark-Sky Association; Resident of San Clemente since 1998.

Personal Note:
I'm a California native and have lived in coastal Southern California my entire life. San Clemente has the atmosphere of the beach cities I grew up in, and it's one of the many reasons my wife and I love living here. I'm a graduate of U.C. San Diego with a degree in Cognitive Science, where I studied software engineering and usability. After many years as a software engineer and user interface designer I joined IBM, where I help customers around the world improve their ability to build complex software engineering projects.I'm fortunate to be able to live and work in San Clemente, and to be part of a community where so many people contribute to the vision and spirit of the city.

It's my goal to realize the vision for our city, as described in the General Plan, in each project that comes before the Planning Commission. Every project and decision impacts the community around it for years to come, and I'm honored to represent the people of San Clemente in making those decisions.
