Group Transportation Services
Group transportation services are provided to San Clemente’s resident seniors free of charge to the San Clemente Senior Center for lunch and activities five days a week, Monday through Friday. Seniors residing in San Clemente are picked up from their homes (door to door service). Seniors are currently picked up in the early (8:00 a.m.) to mid morning (9:30 a.m.) and transported to the Senior Center.

The contractor works with seniors to determine the hours of service that best suit their needs; thus, the pickup hours are subject to modification. Seniors are provided a return trip from the Senior Center to their homes between the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. This service is available to all seniors residing in the City of San Clemente. Frail seniors, seniors in wheelchairs, and elderly in general will be provided assistance on and off the vehicle, door to door. Hours of service will be subject to change based on demand or to improve productivity.

Shopper Shuttle
The most popular aspect of the program is the shopper shuttle which is available three days per week for up to three hours each of the days and allows senior citizens to be picked up at their door and transported to the many shopping centers in San Clemente to run their errands, shop for groceries or just get out for lunch with friends.

The shuttle consists of a comfortable 17 passenger van that is equipped with wheelchair access and air conditioning. Frail seniors, seniors in wheelchairs and elderly in general are provided helpful assistance on and off of the vehicle and door to door service.

Grocery Shopper Shuttle is provided to San Clemente’s resident seniors free of charge for the shuttle ride to the grocery store and back to their homes three days a week (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday). Weekend or holiday service is not available. This does not exceed three (3) hours of transportation time to and from the grocery store. The Shopper Shutter takes San Clemente’s senior residents to select shopping centers in the City (i.e. Albertsons, Ralphs, Wal-Mart, Lowes, etc.). The contractor will allow demand to dictate where the seniors are transported and achieve the best use of the available service hours.

8,000 Senior Citizens
Just over 8,000 senior citizens reside in San Clemente, making up 13 percent of the population. The program is very popular with seniors who otherwise would not have a regular means of transportation and with those who like to get out in a social group setting for lunch and activities. Funding for the City’s Senior Mobility Program is provided from three sources. Eighty percent of the operating costs are provided by the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) and the County Office on Aging. The City of San Clemente provides the remaining 20 percent. Senior residents of San Clemente who are interested in participating in the program, can call the San Clemente Senior Center at (949) 498-3322 to complete an application. South County Senior Services (SCSS), the City’s contractor for senior transportation can also be reached at (949) 498-0400 to answer any questions or concerns. All of SCSS’s drivers possess specialized driver’s licensing certification for the operation of the vehicles and are required to complete ongoing refresher training to assure that their skills in vehicle operation and in assisting special needs passengers remain at a high level.
