San Clemente has the ocean, rugged hills, and coastal canyons, clean air and one of the worlds finest climates, and without a doubt, some of the nicest people in California. But, it is so much more....it is a secure, family oriented community of over 68,316 residents who are highly skilled and well educated. San Clemente offers a unique blend of residential choices, recreational alternatives, and exceptional business opportunities, all in a beautiful coastal setting. The City of San Clemente was incorporated in 1928 as a General Law city and operates under a Council/Manager form of government. There is a five-member City Council elected at large to serve four-year, over-lapping terms and each year the Council elects one of its own members to serve as Mayor for a one year period. The San Diego Interstate 5 freeway, the state's major north-south artery, serves San Clemente and provides a forty minute commute to northern Orange County or sixty minutes to downtown San Diego. John Wayne (Orange County) Airport is located about 30 miles north of San Clemente. Rail service is also available on Amtrak and Metrolink with stations located at beach access.
The Orange County Sheriff's Department provides law enforcement services for the City of San Clemente. 44 sworn and 13 professional staff members operate from the San Clemente station located at 100 Ave. Presidio providing services that include patrol, investigations, traffic enforcement, community support, drug education, parking control, and crime prevention. As always, the Sheriff's Department primary goal is to provide a safe environment for its community members to enjoy San Clemente's many amenities.
