What is the purpose of the Marine Safety Division?
The primary goal of the Marine Safety Division is to help ensure that visitors to the beach have a safe and enjoyable day. This is achieved through providing for water rescue services, first aid, minor law enforcement, and various public education programs focusing on ocean safety. The Marine Safety Division is also responsible for assisting with environmental issues impacting the coast, special event oversight, and the management of all beach and pier concessions.

Marine Safety Service Description
The Beach Services Program provides water observation, rescue response, medical aid and law enforcement services. It also provides environmental management such as coastal erosion, water quality monitoring, and offshore oil moratorium and staff assistance to the Coastal Advisory Committee: grant administration; administration of citywide commercial filming and beach related special events; and administration of seven beach/pier concessions. The Prevention and Education program provides instructional water safety programs through the Junior Lifeguards, Instructional Surfing, School Education, and Media programs.

What are your hours of lifeguard operations?
The Marine Safety Division is staffed from 8:00 a.m. until dusk 365 days a year. The main lifeguard tower on the pier is normally manned by 8:20 each morning, with lifeguard towers on the beach staffed as needed during the off-season.

Normal Summer Staffing:

Tower 14 (North Beach) - 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Tower 6 (Linda Lane) - 10:00 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Tower 1 (South side of pier)- 10:00 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Tower 5 (T-Street) – 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Lifeguard towers in between those listed above open later and close earlier, depending upon crowd conditions. Please call us at (949) 361-8219 if you would like exact times for any particular day.
